Insurance Benefits

Some general comments are in order. We are always happy to help you retrieve your insurance benefits as long as we have the member’s name (the person in your family who is employed and pays for the benefit or whose employer pays for it), the member and patient ID numbers, social security numbers and birthdates for member and patient, and copy of both sides of your card. Your insurance booklet from your human resources department will help us determine your deductible, copays, discounts, and covered/non-covered services and their allowed frequency of use.

Many insurance companies will cooperate fully in allowing us to download your benefits to assist you—but others will be less than cooperative and may purposely issue misleading information or not even have you registered unless you specifically inquire why you are not yet enrolled. While we are talented in interpreting these benefits for you to maximize your coverage, insurance companies have a lot of rules to make generating and paying a claim difficult. Bottom Line: They like collecting premiums, but do not like paying claims.

One insurance company may partner with another to develop or rent a panel of providers or just to credential providers or process claims. Sometimes a routine vision plan will partner with a major medical plan, but we may only be on one of these vision or major medical plans.

It is the best procedure is to plan ahead for your visit by having us help you determine your coverage so there are no surprises. Many patients think they are not covered for any services but may be partially covered by their medical plan for conditions and diseases that have potential ophthalmic manifestations—like diabetes, hypertension, and dry eye. Let us help you to use the benefits you have paid for, and that goes for your flexible spending accounts, too. Think of it like you have pre-paid for a nice meal that you deserve. Now you need to make sure you use the benefit, of course within the context of following all of the standards, laws, rules and ethics pertaining to your care.
